Did you know that technical website optimization plays a critical part in conversion metrics, user experience, and organic traffic?

86% of marketing experts agree that slow site speed is a major reason why visitors leave a website. When the load time on a web page reaches 10 seconds, it can increase the bounce rate by 123%.

Key Takeaways

Why Is Technical SEO Important?

Technical website optimization is a critical component of your digital marketing strategy. At Up Inc., we use a highly efficient and research-backed method of SEO, which includes on-page SEO, off-page SEO, and technical SEO. This holistic approach is what allows us to deliver results and increase rankings for our clients (and you!)

Technical web optimization can make or break your search engine rankings. If the technical elements of your website aren't accessible to search engines, it won't appear in the search results, regardless of how valuable, relevant, or useful the content is!

Some aspects of technical web optimization, including site speed and mobile friendliness, are confirmed ranking factors for search engines like Google.

To understand the full impact of technical web optimization, it's important to understand crawling and indexing.

What Is Technical SEO?

Technical SEO, also known as technical website optimization, is the process of optimizing the technical elements of a website to improve search engine rankings. This can involve things like site speed, core web vitals, and mobile friendliness.

In general, technical website optimization makes it easier for search engines to crawl and index your content (more on that later). However, technical web optimization is also extremely important for user experience (UX). It makes it easy and enjoyable for visitors to navigate, use, and interact with your website.

Technical website optimization is not just about minimizing loading times and optimizing site structure. It keeps visitors interested and engaged, which translates to higher conversion rates, more sales, and increased organic traffic.

It's relatively common for small businesses to have issues with the technical side of their website. Even the most beautifully designed website can slow loading speeds, broken links, or insufficient structured data.

  • 88% of websites have issues with redirecting from HTTP to HTTPS, which is a critical part of keeping a website safe and secure.
  • 80% of websites lack alt tags, which is important for both website optimization and legal compliance.
  • 60% of websites lack H1 tags, and 51% of websites have multiple H1 tags. Both of these can hurt site structure and search engine optimization.
  • 95% of websites have issues with 3XX redirects.

What Is "Crawling" and "Indexing"?

Even if you're familiar with the terms "indexing" and "crawling," now is a good time for a quick refresher.

  • Crawling: Search engines like Google use automated programs to browse web pages. These programs, known as "crawlers," analyze the code and content of each URL they discover.
  • Indexing: Search engines will store and organize the content of the web pages they crawl. This includes the text, images, and videos on the page or within the code. "Indexing" allows web pages to appear in search engine ranking pages (SERPs).

There are a few simple ways to make it easier for search engines to crawl and index your web pages. For example, we typically add a carousel of recent blog posts on the homepage. So, the next time a crawler visits your homepage, it will also discover your recent blog posts.

What Are "Core Web Vitals"?

Core web vitals were introduced by Google in May 2020. Known as the "official ranking factor," core web vitals were made to improve the user experience by analyzing the speed, stability, and responsiveness of a website.

Core web vitals are determined by three metrics: Largest Contentful Paint (LCP), First Input Delay (FID), and Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS).

  • Largest Contentful Paint (LCP): This measures the time it takes for a website to load its largest element.
  • First Input Delay (FID): This calculates the reaction time of a website after a visitor's first interaction.
  • Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS): This measures the unexpected shifts in the layout of web page elements.

Largest Contentful Paint (LCP)

Largest Contentful Paint, or LCP, focuses on loading performance and site speed. It measures the amount of time it takes for the largest visible element to load. Ideally, the quicker, the better! If your largest element takes too long to load, it can increase bounce rates and decrease conversion rates.

In general, you want any given web page on your website to load in under 2 seconds. Ideally, they will load in under 1 second.

Anything above the 2 second mark can significantly impact website performance and overall engagement. Visitors typically won't stick around a website with slow loading speeds. This is even more crucial for mobile users, though many websites aren't optimized for mobile devices.

  • A 2-second delay in loading times can increase your bounce rate by 103%.
  • A 10-second delay in loading times can increase your bounce rate by 123%.
  • 63% of online searches are conducted on mobile devices.
  • 53% of mobile users will leave a web page if loading times exceed 3 seconds.

The good news? We track your site speed on a monthly basis and will alert you if, at any point, your loading time rises above the 2 second mark.

First Input Delay (FID)

First Input Delay, or FID, focuses on the interactivity of your website. It measures the amount of time it takes for your website to react to a user action. Again, the quicker, the better. You don't want to force visitors to wait to perform simple actions, such as clicking a link.

Ideally, your FID will be under 100 milliseconds.

Imagine this: a potential buyer finds your website through the SERPs and clicks a call-to-action on your homepage. This call-to-action would, in theory, direct them to a product page. However, if your First Input Delay is too long, it may cause this once-interested buyer to leave your website and spend their hard-earned money elsewhere.

Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS)

Cumulative Layout Shift, or CLS, is an important part of core web vitals and technical website optimization. In general, it refers to how content is displayed on your website. For example, do you have pop-ups or chatbots that cover part or all of your content? Does your content "shift" while loading, impacting readability or responsiveness?

Things like pop-ups, chatbots, slide-outs, or banner messaging may impact your CLS and lead to penalties from search engines. However, that doesn't mean you need to get rid of them altogether! They can have a positive impact on user experience when implemented correctly.

When you start your search visibility campaign with us, we'll help you optimize the technical elements of your website, and we'll even provide guidance when it comes to pop-ups, chatbots, etc., to ensure you won't receive any search engine penalties.

Benefits of Technical Search Engine Optimization

It's important to ensure your website's architecture, structure, and speed are all optimized to increase organic traffic, boost conversion rates, and enhance the user experience.

The benefits of technical web optimization are more impactful than you might realize. Technical optimization is used to:

  • Support a website that can be used on desktop and mobile devices.
  • Fix broken links, 404 pages, or 3XX redirects so they do not hinder the performance and functionality of a website.
  • Keep a website safe and secure for users.
  • Make a website easy to use and navigate for users so that they can find the information, content, or products they need.
  • Help search engines understand and identify the content of your website so that it can be crawled and indexed.
  • Optimize pop-ups, chatbots, or slide-outs so that they enhance (rather than hinder) the user experience.
  • Add structured data to improve the appearance and visibility of your website in the SERPs.
  • Set up an XML sitemap to improve indexing.

In a nutshell, technical web optimization helps search engines understand and index your website quickly and effectively. It also enhances the user experience by improving navigation, loading times, and structure.

Technical SEO Best Practices

As a part of your search visibility campaign with Up Inc., we'll help ensure the technical elements of your website are properly optimized. We use proprietary tools to crawl your website to identify and flag any technical issues, including broken pages or slow loading times. This helps to identify and fix any issues in a timely manner, keeping your website healthy and functional.

Now that you understand the ins and outs of technical web optimization, it's time to cover some of the best practices for technical website optimization.

HTTPS

Hypertext transfer protocol secure (HTTPS) is a secure version of hypertext transfer protocol (HTTP). It uses encryption when establishing a connection between a browser and a server in order to protect user data. It's also been a key ranking factor since 2014.

88% of websites have issues with redirecting from HTTP to HTTPS.

#2. Duplicate Content

Duplicate content exists when you have identical or nearly identical content in multiple places across your website. Duplicate content can lead to search engine penalties and other issues like backlink dilution or lowered search visibility.

#3. Site Speed

Page speed is a critical component of technical web optimization. It's also a key ranking factor for both desktop and mobile devices. You want your website to load and react as quickly as possible.

A few ways to improve page speed are by compressing images, minifying HTML or CSS files, and using a content distribution network (CDN).

86% of marketers have stated that slow site speed is a major reason why visitors leave a website.

The Bottom Line

Technical web optimization is important if you want to maximize the performance, functionality, and potential of your website. From repairing broken links to including structured data, there are many things that go into technical web optimization. At Up Inc., our holistic approach to SEO ensures that your website stays healthy, which translates to amazing results for your business and brand!
